About your host, Thomas
Hello! I have been living on the Wadden Island Texel for 8 years. I am passionate to show you its beautiful nature, especially the numerous birds here! It’ll be a great experience to explore the island with nice people from around the world!

What we'll do
If you like nature and hope to learn more about the animals and habitats on Texel, this will be a great trip for you! Especially if you do not speak Dutch (as nature-oriented tours from the Ecomare are only offered in Dutch). We will bike and walk through a variety of different habitats of the National Park 'Duinen van Texel'! Dunes, forests, beaches, etc. and I can introduce to you the different ecosystems and beautiful birds. Itinerary: We will first bike to a bird-watching spot to view shorebirds on the mudflat, and also breeding cormorants and spoonbills. Then we wake for 4-5 km (1 h) in the dunes, forest and beach. Then we bike towards the cute village Den Hoorn, and stop briefly at a biological farm with organic vegetables, ice-cream made from fresh cow milk. Then we will bike at the edge of dunes and forest for 1/2 hour. We then bike towards a beach pavilion where you can have a drink, or even swim in the sea! I will introduce to you the ecology of the area and the interesting animals that we might spot. Also, I can suggest you what else to do on the island (according to how long you stay).

The exact itinerary will be slightly adjusted according to the weather, time of the day, and most importantly the participants' wishes.

Where we'll be
The dunes of Texel has a large variety of birds, and provide important habitat for breeding birds such as the spoonbills. During migration season, thousands of birds e.g. the red knot and the bar-tailed godwit, stop here to rest and refuel.
